SEO audit: what it really includes and when it's worth getting one

It's very common to start "doing SEO" without really knowing what's broken: publishing articles, tweaking some copy, crossing your fingers. An SEO audit exists precisely to avoid that waste: it's the full diagnosis that tells you, with data, what's working, what isn't, and why.

What a serious audit actually covers

A complete audit covers at least four areas: the technical side (crawling, speed, indexing, errors), content (which pages bring traffic and which contribute nothing), links (your own link profile and your competitors') and user experience (what makes people leave without converting). Without all four, the diagnosis is incomplete.

Comparing against competitors is the real eye-opener

Looking at your own numbers in isolation tells you little. What actually guides decisions is comparing: why does a direct competitor outrank you for the same searches, what content do they have that you don't, what links have they earned that you haven't.

The result shouldn't be an 80-page report with no priorities

A useful audit isn't an endless list of "things to fix" — it's a prioritised list, starting with what will move the needle fastest with the least effort. If the report doesn't distinguish between "this is critical" and "this is optional", it's hard to actually act on.

When should you get one?

It makes sense to request an audit when launching a new website (to start without hidden flaws), when traffic has been stuck for months with no obvious reason, after a migration or redesign (to check nothing broke), or simply before deciding how much to invest in SEO — so you invest with judgement, not blindly.

Frequently asked questions

Does an SEO audit already fix the problems?

No, it diagnoses them. The audit says what needs doing and in what order; implementation is a separate step (sometimes contracted alongside the audit itself).

How often should it be repeated?

As a rule of thumb, once a year for a stable business, or after any major change (website redesign, domain change, a strong new competitor entering the market).

Is it useful for small businesses, or only for big websites?

It's especially useful for small businesses: with less budget for SEO, it matters even more not to waste it on things that won't have an impact.
