Local SEO: how to show up on Google Maps and in "near me" searches

Search "hairdresser near me" or "dentist in your neighbourhood" right now and look at what shows up first: a map with three featured businesses, ahead of any regular result. That block is called the Local Pack, and for a local business (a shop, a clinic, a restaurant) showing up there can be the difference between making a living from your website or not.

Your Google listing comes first, and it's free

Exact name, correct category, real opening hours, current photos. Google favours active listings: ones that upload photos, respond to reviews, post the occasional update. A complete but abandoned listing competes worse than a modest but alive one.

Reviews matter more than you think

The quantity, quality and frequency of your Google reviews are among the strongest signals there are for local ranking. You don't need to buy them (risky, and Google detects it anyway): just ask for them right after a good experience, while the customer still feels that flash of gratitude.

A detail almost nobody checks: data consistency

If your name, address and phone number show up differently on your website, on Google, and on some old directory, you create confusion that quietly damages your ranking. It's worth a periodic review.

The advantage of playing on your own turf

The great news about local SEO is that you're not competing against the entire internet: you're competing against whoever is physically near you. That makes it far more realistic to rank among the first results within a reasonable time frame, even if your industry is highly competitive nationally.

What if you have several locations or service areas?

Each location needs its own Google listing, with its real address and hours, and the more specific the chosen category, the better. If instead you work across areas without a physical location people visit (a plumber, a lawyer who makes house calls), Google lets you hide the exact address and define a service area — it's just as important to keep that information current as you grow or change areas.

Local content that actually helps

A page or article for each neighbourhood or area you genuinely cover, with useful, specific information (not just the neighbourhood name forced in), reinforces your website's geographic relevance. What doesn't work is duplicating the same page and only changing the city name: Google detects that as filler content and it doesn't help at all.

Frequently asked questions

How soon do you see improvement from local SEO?

It's one of the fastest-responding types of SEO: improvements to your Google listing (photos, category, new reviews) can show up within weeks, well before general website SEO does.

Do I need a website in addition to the Google listing?

Yes. The listing gives you visibility on the map, but the website is what turns that visit into a customer, adds content that builds your authority, and doesn't depend on a third party's rules that can change at any time.

Do negative reviews tank my ranking?

Not directly, but they do affect whether a customer trusts you enough to click. Responding politely and offering a public solution matters more than chasing a perfect, unrealistic score.
